Connecticut Department of Natural Resources

In Connecticut, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides for the conservation, protection, and improvement of the natural resources and environment in the state for present and future generations.  The DEP aims to protect the natural resources in such a manner as to encourage the social and economic development of Connecticut while preserving the natural environment and the life forms of the state.

Some of the functions of the DEP include:

  • to protect health, safety, welfare and natural resources;
  • to manage and protect the flora and fauna for compatible uses by the citizens; and
  • to improve and coordinate the state’s environmental plans, functions and educational programs in cooperation with federal, regional and local governments, other public and private organizations and concerned individuals.

The DEP is comprised of two main branches such as the Environmental Quality Branch (EQB) and the Environmental Conservation Branch (ECB).

The EQB protects the air, land, and water resources of the state by regulating air emissions, wastewater discharges, and solid and hazardous wastes.  The EQB is comprised of the Bureaus of Air Management, Materials Management and Compliance Assurance, and Water Protection and Land Reuse.

The ECB is comprised of two bureaus, namely the Bureau of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.  The Bureau of Natural Resources manages the state’s natural resources especially fish, wildlife, and forests through a program of regulation, management, research, and public education.  The Bureau of Outdoor Recreation provides for the conservation and management of statewide recreation lands and resources to meet the outdoor recreation needs of the public.

Further, DEP’s Central Offices provide administrative management, staff assistance, and ancillary service to support the Commissioner and Bureau Chiefs in implementing the DEP’s mission.  Central Offices include the Offices of Planning and Program Development, Information Management, Adjudications, and Legal Counsel.
