Georgia Department of Natural Resources

In Georgia, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is responsible for the protection and preservation of the state’s natural resources for current and future generations.  The day to day tasks of the DNR is carried out by its six divisions.  These divisions are:

  • Coastal Resources Division (CRD)- manages beaches, shellfish harvest areas, marine fisheries, and marshes in Georgia; administers permit programs, monitors coastal water quality levels, building ramps and fishing piers, manages recreational and commercial fishery resources, conducts research, and represents Georgia during regional fishery commission meetings and discussions;
  • Environmental Protection Division (EPD) -protects the state’s land, water, and air and issues state and federal permits;
  • Historic Preservation Division (HPD)- oversees both state and federal programs such as community planning, grants, National Register of Historic Places, environmental reviews, and historic resource surveys, aimed at preserving Georgia’s historic landmarks;
  • Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division (PRHSD)- maintains and manages over 60 properties for the state of Georgia;
  • Sustainability Division-provides free assistance to businesses and institutions on waste reduction management, pollution prevention, general sustainability, and energy efficiency; and
  • Wildlife Resources Division (WRD)-regulates all fishing, hunting, and watercraft operation in the state, manages state education programs on conservation of natural resources, and protects endangered and non-game animals.

 

Further, the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) provides for the protection and conservation of Georgia’s forest resources.  The services provided by the commission include fire detection, issue of burn permits, wildfire suppression and prevention services, emergency and incident command system expertise, rural fire department assistance, forest management assistance to landowners and communities, the marketing and utilization of forest resources and nature services, and growing and selling quality tree seedlings for planting.
