Nebraska Department of Natural Resources

In Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NDNR) is responsible for the sustainable use and proper management of Nebraska‛s natural resources.  The NDNR’s responsibilities extend to areas such as groundwater, surface water, floodplain management, dam safety, natural resources planning, integrated water management, storage of natural resources and related data, and administration of state funds.

The Nebraska Natural Resources Commission (NNRC) was established pursuant to R.R.S. Neb. § 2-1504 under NDNR.  The commission is responsible for the management of state funding programs administered by NDNR.  The commission shall advise the NDNR and perform all functions that are specifically conferred on the commission by law.  However, the commission shall have no jurisdiction over matters pertaining to water rights.

The NNRC generally consists of 16 members.  Out of the 16 members, three are appointed by the governor of the state to represent the specific interests of municipal water users, surface water irrigators, and groundwater irrigators.  The remaining thirteen members are selected for a period of four-years for each of the river basins in Nebraska’s river basins map that is officially adopted by the commission and on file with the NDNR.

Further, the Nebraska Natural Resources Conservation Service (Nebraska NRCS) provides for the conservation of natural resources on private lands.  The Nebraska NRCS also promotes a healthy and sustainable environment by assisting the private land users in the development and implementation of conservation plans.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) preserves the state’s fish, wildlife, park, and outdoor recreation resources for the maximum benefit of the people.  The head of the NGPC is the board of Commissioners, who is appointed by the governor of the state.  The NGPC consists of the following divisions namely, administration, boating budget and fiscal, engineering fisheries, information and education, law enforcement, operations and constructions , state parks , planning and programming, reality, and wildlife.
