In the U.S., there are several federal agencies charged with the responsibility of studying, caring, and controlling the wildlife damage management issues. These agencies also provide for research, mitigation, and oversight of wildlife damage problems within the U.S.
Most common federal wildlife agencies are:
- U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) – Provides for the management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources;
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) – Provides for the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of citizens of the U.S. FWS is a federal government agency within the DOI;
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – Provides for the protection of life and property; conservation and protection of natural resources; conservation and management of coastal and marine resources to meet the economic, social, and environmental needs of the U.S. NOAA is a scientific agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce;
- U.S. Forest Service – Provides leadership in the protection, management, and use of the nation’s forest, rangeland, and aquatic ecosystems. It is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that administers the nation’s 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands;
- Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) – Provides for the protection of the health and value of U.S agriculture and natural resources. APHIS is an agency within the USDA;
- National Park Service (NPS) – Manages all national parks, numerous national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations. NPS is an agency within the USDA.
There are also some other agencies that provide for the protection of wildlife and natural resources. They are:
- National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) – Advances knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations. NIFA is an agency within the USDA; and
- US Geological Survey (USGS) – Provides reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect the quality of life. USGS is a scientific agency of the U.S. government.
