In Missouri, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) is responsible for the protection, preservation, and enhancement of Missouri’s natural, cultural, and energy resources. The MDNR was established pursuant to § 640.010 R.S.Mo. The head of MDNR is the director, who is appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate. The director shall perform the programs assigned to the MDNR relating to environmental control and the conservation and management of natural resources.
The MDNR’s objectives include:
- to develop mineral resources in an environmentally safe manner;
- to protects Missouri’s land, air, and water resources; and
- to preserve the state’s historic and natural heritage through state parks and state historic sites.
The MDNR consists of the following divisions:
- Division of Environmental Quality- helps Missourians in preventing pollution, protecting the public from harmful emissions, discharges, and waste disposal practices;
- Division of Geology and Land Survey- provides technical assistance to public and private sectors; conducts geologic investigations at liquid, solid, and hazardous waste sites; and restores and maintains the U.S. Public Land Survey System in Missouri;
- Division of State Parks and Historic Sites- preserves and interprets the state’s most outstanding natural landscapes and cultural landmarks, and provides outstanding recreational opportunities compatible with those resources;
- Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority (EIERA)- provides financial assistance for energy and environmental projects; protects environment; conducts research; supports energy efficiency and energy alternatives; and promotes economic development;
- Division of Energy- protects the environment and stimulates the economy through energy efficiency and renewable energy resources and technologies;
- Water Resources Division- reviews the original purposes of Missouri River Basin projects and existing water resource infrastructure; and
- Soil and Water Conservation Division- provides financial incentives to landowners to implement conservation practices that help to prevent soil erosion and protect water resources.
